Ask homeschoolers if they homeschool over the summer, and you're likely to get as many different answers as there are homeschoolers!  In general, the idea of homeschooling over the summer seems to fall into three camps.  For homeschoolers who basically follow a school-type routine, taking the summer off is a part of the plan.    Some homeschooling families create a year-round schedule for themselves, where they might take two weeks off every 10-12 weeks.  Still other families hold to no strict schedule and go with the flow, taking time off as needed and working hard when everyone's really hitting their stride.

One of the benefits of homeschooling is being able to do what's best for your student and your family in terms of time.  So as you're thinking about whether or not to homeschool over the summer, back up and ask yourself the bigger question of how will the time best be spent?  There are no "shoulds" when it comes to homeschooling during the summer.  What is right for one family won't be right for the next, but as long as everyone is consciously making decisions based on what's right for them, all will be fine.

And don't forget, we're all learning all the time!  No one really takes the summer off.  Maybe our day to day routine changes, but we keep on learning together, every day.
